What You'll Find There
The Temple Ruins
The centrepiece is the exposed temple itself a rectangular nave, two side aisles and a curved apse, all Roman stonework dating to the third century AD. The layout follows the typical design of a Mithraeum: a cave-like underground space, deliberately dark, reflecting the mystery cult's emphasis on initiation and secrecy. The immersive lighting and soundscape designed for Bloomberg SPACE evokes what ceremonies in this space might actually have felt like sparse, atmospheric, genuinely eerie in the best possible way.
Over 600 Roman Artefacts
The permanent exhibition displays more than 600 objects excavated from the Walbrook site and nearby areas of Roman Londinium including the famous marble head of Mithras, a head of Serapis, writing tablets, personal items and trading goods. Taken together, they paint a remarkably human portrait of life in Roman London: a city of merchants, soldiers, immigrants and craftspeople from across the Roman empire, living within half a mile of where you're standing right now.
Bloomberg SPACE Programme
Above the temple, Bloomberg SPACE runs a free contemporary art programme exhibitions, talks and events that use the Roman site as a starting point for thinking about the City's layered history. Check their calendar before you visit; there's often something worth staying for.
