Victoria Miro opened her first gallery in Cork Street, Mayfair in 1985, when the West End was still the undisputed centre of the London art world. She built a reputation for showing artists who were serious and significant not fashionable, but important. By 2000, the gallery had outgrown everything the West End could offer. The move to 16 Wharf Road, Islington changed the geography of London's gallery scene. A 10,000 square foot former Victorian furniture factory converted by architect Trevor Horne.
